A quick one this week! The inspiration for this week’s watercolour painting dates back to January this year, when I was delivering my entry to the Royal Institute for the Society of Watercolour Painting at the Mall Galleries.
I remember that I had to get the train to London Bridge and walk along the South Bank to the Mall Galleries. The weather had been been wet, but the sun was breaking through brightly albeit it intermittently between the showers.
Here’s what it looked like after my first wash with all of the pencil lines still visible:
And then I’m afraid, because I got carried away with my painting, we have to fast forward to the finished painting!
For a relatively quick painting, I was pleased with how this turned out. I think it captures the cold bright light of the day and the reflections and shadows across the foreground.
For those that might be familiar with the Southbank, just out of view to the left is The National Theatre, just ahead of Waterloo Bridge the British Film Institute.
British Art Prize 2023
I was finally able to pick up my copy of the January edition of the Artists and Illustrators magazine feature in a double page spread on the British Art Prize 2023 that includes a thumbnail of my own effort, ‘Take me to the river’.

ah, Rob, very good of you to vote! I wouldn’t be at all insulted if your vote went elsewhere, there’s some strong competition, though not very many watercolours I noted!
