Some green shoots!

After last week’s somewhat despairing post (for which I apologise profusely!) – I took my own advice and sought refuge in my sketchbook.

Here’s a quick A5 sketch, done in my A4 sketchbook.

Sketchbook study

The subject is one that I revisited from a couple of years ago when I was painting a lot of trees in preparation for a tree themed exhibition.

Into the woods

It’s only as I’m writing this that I thought to dig out my first sketch:

Exhibit A

This sketch ended up being mounted, framed and sold before I took any better photos of it.

And the two together for comparison:

I like them both, but at the moment, the most important thing is how much I enjoyed the physical act of painting. It was great to get my paints wet, to mix on the palette and on the page and to see the colours mix and mingle.

It’s early days but after quite a while of feeling in the doldrums about painting, I think that there are definitely some green shoots of hope that, fingers crossed, may well flourish again!

Thoughts on Some green shoots!

  1. Both brilliant, John, but I particularly like the freshness of the green in B. I seem to spend half my life trying to paint this sort of thing – unsuccessfully! One small caveat; I can’t get my brain to see the blue gap in the trees as a gap in the trees! Why? I don’t know…

    1. Thanks so much for this Rob, I really appreciate it! This latest version is probably closer to the original reference photo in terms of colour. I do know what you mean about that improbable glimpse of sky. It doesn’t look as if it should be there does it! It is in the reference, so it’s more down to my execution than anything!

I'd love to hear any thoughts you have about this
