I loved how the intense light of the sinking sun almost burns away the edges of the buildings with its glare, casting the buildings into silhouettes and creating the most brilliant shadows.

Really liked the feel of this street scene in Tokyo and how the shadows raking across the foreground combined with all the jumble of wires and cables above the street to create a really dynamic sense of energy that I tried to capture with my brushstrokes.

Winter Light, St. Nicholas Church, Brighton | SOLD

I recall this view so vividly. It was a few days before Christmas day and I was on my way into Brighton to do a few last-minute errands. I took a different route into town than usual, one that took me behind St.Nicholas Church that has a vantage point overlooking Brighton. The sun was low and the light seemed especially characteristic of winter, with a cool almost steely hue to it.

There are some views that I instinctively know are going to work and I could wait to get home to paint this!

This was one of five paintings that I submitted to the 2022 International Watercolour Masters Exhibition. The panel of jurors was comprised of over 20 of the world’s most critically acclaimed watercolour masters. I was one of 3,725 entrants from around the world and, after two stages of judging, I was delighted to receive a Top 200 Merit Award in recognition of my ‘Pursuit of Excellence’.
