]]> I love trying to capture the atmosphere and energy of a place like New York and it’s a subject I return to often. What I particularly like about this painting is the simplification of the subject and the freedom with which the paint’s been applied. I tried to create a balance between the cooler left-hand side of the painting with the warmer tones of the foreground building on the right-hand side. It always feels good when I capture a view that I could imagine myself stepping right in to!

I came across the view on the way back home from a camping trip we’d been on. The view is near Hamsey, outside of Lewes and there was something quintessentially English about it. It’s a beautiful spot and we’ve often been blessed with some great weather on trips, like on this occasion when the sky was so dramatic and the grass of the neighbouring field a lush, vivid green.
